Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to pay volunteers for out of pocket expenses?
Payment of out-of-pocket expenses is a legitimate expense line and should be included in the volunteer department's budget. The cost to the organisation is likely to be minimal compared with the volunteer contribution.
However, some organisations may decide they cannot afford to pay any expenses. In such cases, both current and potential volunteers will need to be informed of the situation. Volunteers should not be made to feel they are obliged to claim expenses.

Should our organsation have insurance?
Organisations should have both Public Liability (Check with your insurance provider as to whether the policy must mention Volunteers) and Personal Accident Insurance for volunteers. Personal Accident and Injury insurance cover should provide protection in the event of an accident whilst performing volunteer work.

National Police Certificates.

Is there an age limit for volunteers?
There is no universally determined age limit that dictates the ages of volunteers. However, organisations should consider a number of issues when developing volunteer roles, to help them in deciding whether it is appropriate to include age limits for specific volunteer roles.

Risk - some volunteer roles will have certain levels of risk attached to them, which may make them inappropriate for very young volunteers.
Insurance - there may be an age limit specified in the organisations volunteer insurance policies.
Supervision - it may be considered that there would not be adequate supervision and support available for the position to be appropriate for youth volunteers.
Government funding - if an organisation receives funding from government, the funding contract may specify that volunteers are within a certain age bracket.
