Volunteers - Every One Counts

National Volunteer Week (NVW) is the largest celebration of volunteers and volunteerism in Australia, and provides an opportunity to highlight the role of volunteers in our communities and to say thank you to the more than 6.4 million Australians who volunteer


2012 Northern Territory Volunteer of the Year Awards

Territorians  Awarded For Their Volunteering Efforts

NT Education and Training Minister Chris Burns announced the winners of the Volunteer of the Year Awards at a ceremony at Parliament House last night.
Dr Burns said the awards, a partnership between the Territory Government and Volunteering SA/NT, recognise and promote the importance of volunteering in the Territory community.
 

Award category the winners are:
  • The Chief Minister's Medal for Volunteering Achievement - Abraham Ghawu
  • The Chief Minister's Medal for Volunteering Service - Dyanne Allport, NT Fire and Rescue Service
  • The Volunteering SA&NT Award for Organisational Excellence - Melaleuca Refugee Centre (large organisation) and Riding for the Disabled in the Top End (small organisation)
Recipients of the Most Valuable Volunteers Certificates were:
  • Kate Savage - Lifeline Top End
  • Gary Baker - NT Emergency Services - Arnhem
  • Ron Green - NT Emergency Service - Katherine
  • Andrew McKay - NT Emergency Service - Darwin
  • Fritz Risler - Royal Lifesaving Society
  • Ali Family Support Group - Melaleuca Refugee Centre (Bree Neesham, Jasmine Dwyer, Clement Taban)
  • Beverly Henwood - Anglicare NT- Community Visitor scheme
  • Susan Shotton - The Douglas Daly Community Development Association Inc
  • Miss Anthropic - Darwin Roller Girls Roller Derby League
  • Shaye Enright - Cantarbillay Kids Choir
  • Graham Pedder - Anglicare NT ReStore
  • Christopher Putland - Surf Life Saving NT
  • Jillian Metcalfe - George Brown Botanic Gardens
  • Michelle Thomas - NT Emergency Service - Alice Springs Volunteer Unit
  • Selwyn Kloeden - NT Emergency Service - Hermannsburg Volunteer Unit
  • Phil Merry - NT Emergency Service - Barkly Volunteer Unit
  • Steve Axten - Basketball Northern Territory
'The stories for each of the individuals recognised tonight are truly inspiring and humbling, there are so many people working hard for the benefit of their community, so congratulations to all the nominees and winners', Dr Burns said.
The Awards are part of the Territory 2030 Strategic Plan to improve the level of volunteering in the Territory.
