Volunteers - Every One Counts

National Volunteer Week (NVW) is the largest celebration of volunteers and volunteerism in Australia, and provides an opportunity to highlight the role of volunteers in our communities and to say thank you to the more than 6.4 million Australians who volunteer



 

Executive Staff


Evelyn O'Loughlin
VSA&NT CEO

The CEO of Volunteering SA&NT, Evelyn has 13 years experience in executive management roles. She previously held positions in government, community education, public relations, community health and children services and spent eleven years overseas with a multinational and a London based organisation.

Evelyn has had extensive practical experience in the not-for-profit sector, initially as General Manager of the Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia Inc. Pursuing her personal passion for representing Communities of Interest and CaLD aged care management, she is at present Board Director of the Migrant Resource Centre SA and Carers Australia SA; and a member of the Council on the Ageing SA (COTA Seniors Voice) Policy Council.

She is also the immediate past Chair of Multicultural Aged Care Inc, where she held a Board Director's role for over 5 years. Her personal memberships include SACOSS, Multicultural Communities Council, Migrant Women's Lobby Group, Operation Flinders and the Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia. In 2009 - 2010 Evelyn was a member of the Special Olympics 2010 National Games Organising Committee, for the IX National Games which were held in Adelaide in April 2010.

In December 2010, Evelyn was appointed for a 3 year term, as the only South Australian representative to the Federal Government's 12 member Not-for-Profit Sector Reform Council. The Council role is to support the implementation of smarter regulation, improved transparency and accountability, reduced red tape and to provide advice on the Productivity Commissions 2010 Report.

Tim Jackson
Chairman

Tim became the first Chief Executive Officer of the City of Playford in 1997 following the amalgamation of the Cities of Elizabeth and Munno Para in South Australia. Prior to this he was General Manager of Operations for the City of Stonnington which was at the forefront of Local Government reform in Victoria in the mid 1990's.

Tim has formal qualifications in local government management together with over 30 years experience. His extensive experience in change management was gained from being involved in the merger of councils in two states.


Mark Witham
Treasurer,   Board Member VA
The current SA representative on the Volunteering Australia Board, Mark was General Manager, Client Services within Public Trustee for the past 6 years and was previously Director Resource Allocation in the Department of Education and Children's Services.

Mark has a degree in economics from the University of Adelaide and a PhD from James Cook University. He is an active volunteer in education, recreation and environmental endeavours. As a Board member of VSA&NT, Mark hopes to bring economic and social dividends together through volunteering and community enterprise.


Karen Buenger
Vice Chair

Karen developed her passion for Volunteering from her early days as a Scout and later as a Red Cross Volunteer.  "I have had a pretty strong vision of what volunteering is and can be for a long time now.  Scout's can do anything is a quote that I now weave into all volunteering work I touch." Karen has been on the VSA&NT board since 2009 and has also been volunteering as a director on the Australasian Association of Volunteer Administrators (AAVA) since 2007. In her professional life, Karen has worked in many different fields of Volunteer Management, including the Aged Care sector with Helping Hand Aged Care, Local Government with the City of Prospect and is now the Director of Volunteer Services at the Lyell McEwin Regional Volunteer Association.

Karen has an Advanced Diploma in Volunteer Management and holds other management and training qualifications.


Joe Capozza FAIM Cp Mgr, Dip Mgt

Joe is currently the National Volunteer Services Manager for Make-A-Wish Australia. He is responsible for over 1150 volunteers across Australia who deliver wishes to children with life threatening medical conditions. Having previously been a volunteer with Make-A-Wish, he could not resist the opportunity to join the organisation as a senior executive.

Joe Capozza was previously Chief Executive of United Way South Australia Inc.and prior to that, the Chief Executive Office of the Women's Housing Association managing 350 homes Statewide for women who had suffered domestic violence. Until December 2009, he was Director of The Volunteer Service for Flinders Medical Centre Inc since 2002 where he was responsible for over 570 volunteers with many varied roles within a South Australian public hospital environment.

Joe has had over 15 years experience in the non-profit industry working with both corporate volunteers and health related services. He was Executive Officer for various Industry Associations with Business SA for 2 years and, prior to that, 6 years with the Australian Kidney Foundation as State Manager SA/NT. Joe also volunteered for 2 years with Volunteering SA&NT on the Finance and Business Development Committee.


Richard Geyer

Richard has 45 years experience in the computer industry and has been a member of the Australian Computer Society for 35 years. During his career he worked for multi-nationals and Government Agencies. His work included mainframe engineering, technical training, operations and project management, network design, and the establishment and management of large-scale computing facilities contracts. Richard has tertiary qualifications in electronics, computing and workplace training. He retired in early 2004 and keeps busy with volunteer work for Volunteering SA&NT and the Rostrum organisation.

 

Bruce Hammond - VolunteeringSA Boardmember


Bruce Hammond

Bruce is a proud husband and father of three who successfully ran and owned Australia's first wholly owned Aboriginal ICT Company - Advanced Technology Services - and was in business for seven years supporting the Aboriginal and wider communities in SA.

He has previously been Senior Policy Officer, Department for Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation; Ministerial Liaison Officer - the late Terry Roberts (MLC); Research officer for the Mortlock Library and State Records Office and is Chair, VSA NT Aboriginal Reference Group, while finding time to volunteer for the Port Districts Football Club.

Currently, Bruce is Indigenous Land Management Facilitator - Dept for the Environment, Water Heritage and the Arts (Federal).

Olivia Birkett

Olivia Birkett currently works for the NT Major Events Company as an Event Coordinator. This busy role involves the planning and implementation of many hallmark events in the Northern Territory, including BASSINTHEGRASS music festival and the Alice Springs Masters Games. In her recent role with NT Sport and Recreation, Olivia worked on the Arafura Games, a multi-sport international event held biennially in Darwin. Many of these events rely on short term staffing, multiple contractors and a large volume of voluntary assistance, which Olivia has managed.

Prior to her work with the NT Government, Olivia has spent the majority of her career with state and national peak sporting bodies, including time as the East Regional Manager at England Netball and General Manager of Tennis NT. Olivia has an honours degree in Human Movement (Sports Science) and a Graduate Certificate in Athlete Career Education.

Her passion for sport extends into her spare time, where Olivia plays and referees basketball, coaches athletics and sits on various club committees. She has been volunteering for sports clubs since she was 14 and plans to for many years to come. Olivia joined the Volunteer SA/NT board in January 2012 and hopes that her sport and Northern Territory knowledge will be of benefit to the organisation.


 

Sam Hellams
Sam is a senior executive with more than 15 years experience in legal, marketing and general management roles and has worked in the private and government sectors.

She has also spent a number of years outside her working life volunteering for a wide range of community organisations and has been a member of the Volunteering SA & NT's Compliance Committee since 2009. With a long-held passion for the disability sector, she has been a volunteer with Riding for the Disabled and sheis currently a volunteer board member of the Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Association of SA Inc and volunteers on an Advisory Committee to the Phoenix Society of SA.

With tertiary qualifications in Arts, Law and Business Administration, Sam is a Fellow of the Governor's Leadership Foundation and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
