NEW National Standards for Volunteer Involvement

Volunteering Australia's new National Standards for Volunteer Involvement were launched on Monday 11 May 2015 to mark the beginning of National Volunteer Week 2015 (11-17 May). The new Standards incorporate significant changes to the original standards in order to reflect best practice in volunteer management in Australia's current work environment.

The Standards provide a sound framework for supporting the volunteer sector in Australia. The Standards are much easier to follow and are adaptable to different organisation types and different forms of volunteering which reflect the diversity of this growing sector. VA Submission
Re:think on Tax Discussion Paper, NFP Sector

This submission considers the role that the fringe benefits tax (FBT) and deductible gift recipient (DGR) concessions play in the volunteering sector, in the wake of of recent Government cutbacks in direct funding to the volunteering sector, while at the same time introducing other policy changes (such as Work for the Dole) that will result in increased demands on the volunteering sector.

Volunteering Australia and the national volutneering peak bodies are concerned that any changes to the FBT and DGR concessions that reduce the overall level of financial support to not-for-profit (NFP) organisations will:

  • make it harder or more expensive for NFPs to recruit and retain appropriately skilled staff because of salary parity issues
  • make it harder for NFPs to attract charitable donations and philanthropic grants, and consequently
  • reduce the amount of staff time, skills or cash available to NFPs to provide services.
